Book Jacket Design

Role
Graphic Designer

Subject
The Martian by Andy Weir

About
The Martian by Andy Weir is one of my favorite comedic science fiction novels. It was my pleasure to bring new life to the story by redesigning the book jacket.

Plot
A story of survival, hostile terrain, and potatoes. Lots and lots of potatoes!

Design Process
Conceptual thumbnail designs help map out a variety design styles and starting points. The writing style of The Martian is realistic, yet comedic
, so I wanted to incorporate both qualities into my design style. Three design styles sketched coincide with photographic, graphic (illustration/vector), and typographic.

Conceptual Sketches

Design C (right)

  • typography focused

  • Mars in the background

  • potentially, Earth in foreground.

Design B (middle)

  • graphic/vector-based

  • a lonely potato floating through space

  • trajectory line from Mars (front cover) to Earth (back cover).

Design A (left)

  • photographic

  • focus on martian terrain

  • potato sprout
